[Meet the founder]
Sydney Nwakanma
In 2019, Founder and Creative Director Sydney Nwakanma visited Nigeria and learned from his cousin about the widespread disoccupation affecting West Africans despite good education. Together, they launched the fashion brand EMEKA to create job opportunities. This initiative connects African craftsmanship with the European market while promoting equality and sustainability in fashion.
Through EMEKA, Sydney explores the intersection of environmentalism, diversity, and creativity, establishing a unique brand identity that has gained recognition in Vogue, Elle and GQ. He also founded CYCLES STUDIO, which offers high-level production in culture, film, and music with a focus on diversity.
“A direction of true equality, sustainability and the desire for a better future.”
[Brand’s impact]
what makes it unique?
A VISION FOR EMPLOYMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY
EMEKA’s mission supports local communities in Kenya and Ghana by creating jobs for artisans and honouring Africa's cultural heritage. The brand believes the Global North can learn sustainability lessons from the innovative practices of the Global South. While achieving full sustainability is challenging due to global shipping and production impacts, EMEKA is committed to innovating for a greener future. Sustainability is an ongoing journey, but they hope to lead other creators toward a more sustainable world, one garment at a time.
