Who are you and what's your role in fashion?
I am the Co-Founder of Fashion Minority Alliance, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, alongside celebrity stylist, Cheryl Konteh. Our mission is to drive lasting change in the fashion industry through promoting perspectives and initiatives that break the cycle of progression and regression, as described by Angela Davis. I am also the owner of an international lifestyle communications agency, B2B Media Ltd, which I launched in 2006, which motivates me to focus on what I can do to make a meaningful change and contribute to the fashion industry with positive solutions.
What excites you about being part of the selection panel for the Accelerator?
I am honoured to be part of the jury and sit alongside a panel of accomplished and inspiring individuals who represent the changing face of influence in the industry. Secondly, Zalando is one of Europe's biggest online retailers and to see it commit to re-evaluating its organisational structure, ways of working and resourcing in order to create greater equity for underrepresented brands is something I am thrilled to be a part of.
What do you hope to see in the applications?
I hope to see well-executed, sustainable collections that feel fresh and that show innovation in technique, silhouette, materials and, most importantly, have universal appeal.
Why do you think this accelerator is valuable?
This accelerator has a wraparound approach; from how to become Zalando-ready to marketing, mentoring and pitching. These elements help brands build their business vision, sharpen their business and creative skills as well as their capabilities across the supply chain and soft skills. For those brands which are onboarded it will be a seat at the table that will propel each business to the next level and shift financial opportunities to the brand in a way that creates a systems change.
